Every year, more than 2,000 babies are born in Swedish Covenant Hospital’s Family Birthing Center. The center pairs the comfort of home with excellent and compassionate medical support. Our partnership with Lurie’s Children’s Hospital, the hospital’s Magnet® recognition, along with extensive program offerings ensures the best care for both mother and baby. Swedish Covenant Hospital offers a holistic approach to the continuum of prenatal to postpartum support – from an innovative CenteringPregnancy model of prenatal care to maternal mental health care and support groups for new moms.
Charitable gifts to the Family Birthing Center will help support community programs designed to provide new and expecting parents with the resources to care for their families, including:
Safe Sleep Initiative: In order to better educate new parents on actions they can take in order to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and other sleep related causes of infant death, Swedish Covenant Hospital launched the Safe Sleep Initiative. Funds support resources, including wearable blankets and co-sleepers, as well as safe sleep education at multiple points of contact.
Education: Swedish Covenant Hospital offers educational programs including childbirth classes, infant CPR trainings, and breastfeeding classes for expectant parents. In addition, a weekly new mom’s group provides a supportive environment for new moms to connect. Sessions are facilitated by midwives, psychologists, lactation consultants and other experts, and cover topics such as postpartum body changes, feeding challenges, exercising post-delivery, dealing with baby blues and more.
Maternal Mental Health Program: We are enhancing mental health services for expectant and new mothers by offering counseling sessions for women with postpartum depression. This program builds upon existing prenatal programs to enhance mental health services for expectant and new mothers, including a psychologist-led discussion on mental health and postpartum depression through the CenteringPregnancy program.
CenteringPregnancy: The CenteringPregnancy model of prenatal care replaces traditional one-on-one prenatal visits with group sessions to promote greater patient engagement, empowerment, and community-building. The Centering model empowers women by valuing the experience each woman brings to the group, while building knowledge through skill-building and education. Each Centering cohort consists of 8-12 women with similar due dates who meet monthly, giving members a community of support from women at the same point in pregnancy. Group discussion topics range from nutrition and exercise, to childbirth preparation and parenting.
Outpatient Lactation Clinic: Swedish Covenant Hospital has the only outpatient lactation clinic in the city of Chicago. The Breastfeeding Clinic provides moms with access to internationally board-certified lactation consultants and nurse practitioners in hour-long visits.
