Many women in our area face significant language, financial and cultural barriers that make it a challenge to access even the most basic health care. The Women’s Health Initiative was created to help remove these barriers to care and expand access to health services and information.

Gifts to Women’s Health will help to provide preventive, diagnostic and support services for uninsured and underinsured women who are unable to afford health care. Services covered by the Foundation are based upon critical needs identified in our community, and include the following highlights.

Mental Health Services
The Women’s Health fund helps to underwrite mental health services for women who lack access to mental health benefits, because either they are uninsured or their insurance does not cover it. This year, we anticipate 50 women will receive mental health services free of charge or at significantly reduced rates.

Violence Prevention Program
The Violence Prevention Program strengthens the hospital’s capacity to identify and respond to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking. The program aims to create comprehensive screening and referral protocols and regular staff trainings; provide seamless referral and safe transportation to emergency shelters; create patient education materials; and formalize partnerships with culturally and linguistically diverse community organizations.

Breast Cancer Detection Services
Philanthropic support allows us to provide breast cancer detection services including mammograms, biopsies, MRIs and ultrasounds for women in our community who are unable to afford them. Since the program began, more than 5,000 women have received these potentially life-saving procedures at Swedish Covenant Hospital.

Community Education and Outreach
Charitable gifts provide ongoing support for outreach services, educational events and innovative programing for women in our community. We are partnering with more than a dozen ethnic-focused organizations like the Vietnamese Association of Illinois to provide tailored programs to meet the cultural needs of the diverse population we serve.

With your help, we can continue to care for thousands of women each year – whether they face an urgent need, a devastating diagnosis or seek to improve their overall health and quality of life. Your charitable gift of:

    • $10,000 will help provide domestic violence and human trafficking awareness training for front line clinicians.
    • $5,000 will provide biopsies for five uninsured women in need of additional testing.
    • $1,000 will cover the cost of providing ten women in need with mental health counseling sessions.
    • $500 will purchase ten care packages for women who are victims of violence presenting in the Emergency Department.
    • $150 will underwrite one mammogram for a woman who cannot afford to pay.
