Healing Garden Society

SCH Healing Gardens

In 2008, Swedish Covenant Hospital unveiled plans to build its first healing garden under the auspices of the Donna LaPietra and Bill Kurtis Healing Garden Society. The garden was designed by renowned landscape architect Maria Smithburg to create a sense of well-being for our patients, their families and the entire Swedish Covenant Hospital community. This magnificent garden will stimulate the imagination while nurturing the soul of all who enter this natural healing space.

What are Healing Gardens?

Studies have shown that healing gardens provide a natural setting where patients can experience stress reduction and potential relief from symptoms while experiencing an overall feeling of serenity and spiritual well-being. These gardens have shown to provide psychological, social, physical, emotional, and spiritual benefits to humans. It is also believed that healing gardens enhance a sense of control and emotional well-being. Our first healing garden will offer a respite from the typical hospital environment by providing serene sanctuaries throughout. We hope that this and future gardens will create a sense of community and healing for all.

The Donna LaPietra and Bill Kurtis Healing Garden Society

The Society is named in honor of Donna LaPietra and Bill Kurtis, who have shown great compassion and integrity in their commitment to advancing a healing environment for our community. Members of this society will include those whose annual support of Swedish Covenant Hospital Foundation is designated to support and sustain the healing gardens of Swedish Covenant Hospital. Donors who make pledged commitments of $5,000 and greater will be recognized individually throughout the garden with unique naming opportunities and become permanent Founders of the Society.
